How Sports Shaped My Life
My love of sports goes way back to when I was a kid. I remember my dad was a fan of Mike Tyson and he used to watch every single one of his fights. As a kid, the last thing you want to do is go to bed. Those Saturday night fights were the perfect excuse for me to stay up late and hangout with my dad.
Sports was one of the reasons STATE started. I never thought about connecting Sports with Keyframes until I moved to the US and saw that I could combine them both and have fun with it.
Since then, I’ve been beyond connected to sports. Last year, I had a chance to go all the way back to my boxing nights. We worked on a project with UFC and FS1 for the The Ultimate Fighter Season 25.
We went all the way to Vegas and shot with the TJ Dillashaw and Cody Garbrant. That was a crazy day! Here I was, 20 years later directing these high profile fighters for one of the most significant organizations in the world. All I could picture was 10 year old Marcel watching fights with his dad and how happy he would be. My dad isn’t around anymore, but I can reassure you that he played a prominent role in my career.
This weekend Cody and TJ will battle again for the UFC title. Regardless of who wins, the spot we did last year will always be so special to me.
PS: Now that I am a parent myself, I can see how powerful it is to create a connection with my son.
